Societies

Societies are groups that young boys join after they have risen to being uagi (semi-adults) after the rite of puberty at ten years of age. Societies are governed by a national organization that oversees the origination of each society chapter. Each city has a number of societies, depending on their size. Some societies have affiliations with other societies in other cities, however treaties between multiple societies in a single city is against the rules. 

Each new member of a society is given a Uagikathe, a wooden sword with a padded end. A society member who sees a member of a rival society on is permitted to attack that rival with the sword, and the "hit" is recorded.  This attack may be done anywhere, and students are told to carry their sword with them everywhere. 

The Relsudsinsan Incident

 It was uncovered in 43 NG that the members of the Relsudsinsan (Dragon, literally "fire sky lizard") society was using the society to commit crimes such as petty theft and vandalism. The society had twenty-two members convicted, ranging from the age of 10 to 18. fourteen of the members were publicly beaten, and the remaining eight were flogged. Most of them also were sentences to work to pay off the debt of what they had stolen.
